I've done this one before, but WTF. Like whispercricket (from whom I ganked this meme), I've used "Started it" to indicate films I own but have not yet watched, since I don't believe there are any films on the list that I've started but not finished.
I am very much not surprised, except by the fact that you haven't seen Run Lola Run. Fix this!
Back in 2000-ish, the American Film Institute released the top 100 films of the first century of film making. I had seen 52 of them and figured I ought
to complete the list (yay Netflix!) This list is surpsisingly similar.
The movies from the AFI list that I havent seen (because I cant find them
17. THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951)
73. WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1939)
90. THE JAZZ SINGER (1927)
97. BRINGING UP BABY (1938)
For this list, I'm deficient in
-Paths of Glory
-Requiem for a dream
-American History X
-Touch of Evil
-Strangers on a Train
And...Run Lola Run (uh-oh)
Intreesting that IMDB has some oldies that AFI left out of their list.
The African Queen
still isn't out on DVD here in R1, and neither is the 1927 version of The Jazz Singer
. (With the exception of King Kong
, due out next month, they're the only two left from that top-100 list
that aren't on DVD.)
All the other films you mention either are or have been released on DVD here. If you can't find them, maybe try Netflix? Though you might want to hold off on Ran
until you can rent the upcoming Criterion release; with any luck, it should be a significant improvement over the (ungreat) current release.
As for the differences in lists, IMDb's list is based on user votes; I don't know whether the AFI list is tallied from critics' votes or whether it's just compiled by fiat.
