I am now a proud possessor of Robyn Hitchcock's laid-back and trumpet-laden (!) cover version of Tubeway Army's "Are 'Friends' Electric?", which works really remarkably well.

I am also now a possessor of Paul Young's synth-heavy 1983 cover version of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Please note that the word "proud" does not appear anywhere in the preceding sentence. Ooo-errrr.

"Are 'Friends' Electric?" is from a compilation by Terry Edwards entitled Queer Street. It's a 2003 recording with RH, Kimberley Rew on guitar, Morris Windsor drumming, some non-ex-Soft-Boy on bass, and Terry Edwards on trumpet. After listening to RH's take on "Funkytown", I decided I had to hear him do Gary Numan, and I am not disappointed.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is from Paul Young's first album, No Parlez, though I just picked up the $6 el-cheapo compilation instead. I'd heard it once before, and decided I needed it for my collection of jaw-dropping cover versions. (And jaw-dropping it is; layers of synths, big drum machines, soulful vocals, female backing vox...)  :-)
