Week in review

1. Vacation agrees with me entirely too much, damnit. I'm not looking forward to my return to work.

2. Had a visit from my sister (the lovely meejahoar) from Thursday to Monday. We did lots of shopping (clothes, shoes, clothes, books, clothes, drugs, clothes); saw a couple of movies (new Casino Royale in the cinema on opening day, not-so-new The China Syndrome on DVD); wandered the Harvard Museum of Natural History to view the lovely Glass Flowers; cooked several meals in (reel in incredulity, O ye who know me); ate a few great meals out (Ciao Bella, Solea, Takemura); and generally had a ball.

3. Incidentally, I thought Casino Royale was fantastic: the best Bond film in a long, long time, and one of the best of the whole series. I hadn't really been worried about Daniel Craig other than wishing that he had black hair, but was still pleased to find him excellent in the role: he's probably the closest match ever for the Bond of the Fleming novels, blond hair or no. The film was long, and I wonder whether it might perhaps have sagged a bit in the third act for viewers who hadn't read the original book, but I enjoyed the hell out of it and will almost certainly need to see it again before it leaves the cinemas. Mmmm. It's also apparently the first Bond film ever to feature rain; who knew?

4. I broke down last week and ordered Patrick O'Brian's complete Aubrey/Maturin series in hardcover (fearing that the publisher, W.W. Norton, might re-issue the hardcovers in inferior new editions, as they've recently done with the softcovers). The books showed up a few days ago, and I'm now re-reading them from the start, completely addicted... again. And I have to say, they're no less entertaining or gripping even now I'm aware that O'Brian didn't know how to sail, wasn't Irish, and, well, wasn't named Patrick O'Brian.
