03:12 pm - No cake? Interesting article in The Times today on famous quotations which were made up or misattributed — including Marie Antoinette's "Let them eat cake" (Qu'ils mangent de la brioche).
I knew that Hermann Göring never actually said, "When I hear the word 'culture', I reach for my revolver." But most of the others are news to me.

As a kid, I never understood what was so bad about what Marie Antoinette was supposed to have said in the first place. The peasants are starving? Give them a lovely dessert. That should take their mind off their troubles. The only thing I could think of was that she'd omitted frosting, and that had riled up the proles. |
