Dick, Dick, Dick...

"...Cheney's statements... echo those of several congressional Republicans who have criticized the president's response to the terrorist attempt over the past several days and the fact that he waited until four days after the incident to speak publicly about it..."

But then:

"...Bush was not subjected to criticisms from either Democrats or the media when he waited six days to respond to Richard Reid's attempted shoe-bombing of an airplane on December 22, 2001. Like Obama, Bush was also on vacation when that botched terrorist attack occurred."
CNN report on Dick Cheney's continued griping

Now, this is a subject of personal significance to me, since I'm flying from the UK to the US soon. So far, the record, it seems to me, looks like this:

Bush and Dick's first year in office: 3 hugely successful terrorist attacks on airplanes (WTC, Pentagon, Flight 93) + 1 unsuccessful one (shoe-bomber Richard Reid). Fatalities: 2,974.

Obama's first year in office (so far): 1 unsuccessful terrorist attack on an airplane (pants-bomber Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab). Fatalities: 0.

I can't say that I feel 100% safe flying; that's never going to be possible. But I can say that I don't feel "less safe" (Dick's words) than I did when flying in the 2001–2008 period.
