Now, this is a subject of personal significance to me, since I'm flying from the UK to the US soon. So far, the record, it seems to me, looks like this:
Bush and Dick's first year in office: 3 hugely successful terrorist attacks on airplanes (WTC, Pentagon, Flight 93) + 1 unsuccessful one (shoe-bomber Richard Reid). Fatalities: 2,974.
Obama's first year in office (so far): 1 unsuccessful terrorist attack on an airplane (pants-bomber Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab). Fatalities: 0.
I can't say that I feel 100% safe flying; that's never going to be possible. But I can say that I don't feel "less safe" (Dick's words) than I did when flying in the 2001–2008 period.
