...Dick Francis (1920–2010), whose sequence of horse racing-related thrillers were an integral part of my life from childhood. His books were among the first that I can remember borrowing off my Mum's shelves — Francis was in the family well before I was — and they hold up for me even now: I re-read the full set every five years or so.

His last few works were not quite up to the standards of his best (Reflex, Whip Hand, etc.), but I'm still sad to know that there won't be a new Francis book coming out every year or two.

That is sad. I heard that his wife was the real powerhouse behind the creative endeavors, so when she died, the work was noticeably diminished.

For some reason, my favorite was always Proof.
