You know, the thing that stands out to me (aside from Lord Pearson being pretty much the epitome of the massively condescending upper-class twit. what a smirk he has!) is that the press is willing to push him on things like this. On most US news programs, the interviewers wouldn't even get as far as asking about details, they'd just give him a platform from which to spout the soundbites he so clearly wanted to recite and would never challenge him on anything he says.

Have you seen the video of Jeremy Paxman interviewing Michael Howard (then leader of the Conservative Party)?YouTube has it:
the good part starts around 1:39 or so.
It's a treat, although Paxman never does get a straight answer out of Howard.
