The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has put up a page supporting the re-introduction of H.R. 107, the Digital Media Consumers' Rights Act (DMCRA). The intent of the DMCRA is to redress some of the effects of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA): in particular, it modifies the DMCA so that bypassing encryption for non-copyright-infringing use (such as making backups of purchased CDs or DVDs) is no longer a violation.
See US Rep. Rick Boucher's web page for a full description of the bill (sixth bullet-point and sub-headings).
I heartily endorse this product, franchise, concept or axiom.
