I can’t help thinking about the US military barber who presumably shaved the beard that Saddam Hussein was wearing when he was captured. Whether it was a real barber or not, someone must have shaved him: a later photograph shows him wearing his traditional moustache. And I very much doubt they’d have let him do it himself: prisoners don’t generally get access to razors.

I wonder: did anyone ask him what style he wanted? Or — as I expect — did the military order him shaved to pre-war specifications in order to help convince skeptical Iraqis that the man in custody really was Saddam Hussein?

(I also wonder whether the doctor seen examining Hussein said “please” when asking him to open his mouth. I’m guessing not. Strange, the little things the mind fixates upon.)
