Big Bird Goes to the White House

“Marking what the British website Digital Spy described as ‘possibly the most bizarre cross-over between two series yet seen on television,’ several Sesame Street characters are scheduled to appear on the March 3rd episode of The West Wing.”

That makes sense if they're appearing as "people/puppets who are on Sesame Street", as if, say, the president were honoring the nation's best-loved children's educational program. That could even be played tongue-in-cheek, with the regular characters pretending to interact with the Sesame Street characters as their characters, without breaking the metaphor too badly.

On the other hand, if they're actually appearing as their characters, i.e., "President What's-his-name converses with a giant bird concerned about social issues," well, then I have to agree with Digital Spy. And really hope that that's what they're doing. :)

"The characters reportedly include Big Bird and Elmo, who make their appearances when First Lady Abigail Bartlet, played by Stockard Channing, is invited to appear in a Sesame Street public service announcement in which she tells how she can be both a First Lady and a doctor. (She ends up giving Elmo a check-up.)"

So, sorry, no such luck.

(And... geez. Did it have to be Elmo?)

Of course it had to be Elmo. He's the most popular character in the history of the universe. Many children, even those who actually watch Sesame Street, are unaware that there are other Muppets. They think of Grover as "the blue Elmo".

Sad but true. More proof, if you needed it, that children are stupid.
