Secure Beneath the Watchful EyesThis poster (advertising the security provided by the Metropolitan Police in London) is... just... I... is this serious? And if so, how on earth did anyone think this was a good idea?

(Incidentally, the discussion below the poster, on the linked site, includes a link to the trashiest cover art for a classic novel that I've seen in a while.)

I believe this indicates that someone in the Metropolitan Police public relations department is not without a sense of irony. A vast, richly developed sense of irony. If I had to guess, and I do, I'd go so far as to say he designed this poster expecting it to be quashed and himself to be rebuked by his superiors, and is now quietly and satisfyingly agog that it passed muster.

As someone in that discussion put it:

"I know what they're powering the cameras with. They hooked a turbine to Orwell's spinning corpse."

(Very nice turn of phrase, that.)

so it occured to me that it might be merely a very cleverly executed prank. so much for wishful speculation.
