Dear Chris Helgren,

In the opening paragraph of your Reuters article today, you wrote, "...President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair vowed to stamp out all violence in Iraq."

I know this is nit-picking, and I understand that I should really be paying more attention to the main thrust of the story (about a US serviceman being held captive by Iraqi fighters), but come on: "stamp out... violence"? Why not just write "eschew obfuscation" and be done with it?

You're supposed to be a professional writer. Do better.

"... and the Air Force shot down Kent State."

(Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick's canonical example of why it's bad to get cute with your "team X defeated team Y" notations in sports reporting, from their book The Big Show)
