02:33 am - Slit-scan!
Someone with an SGI and far too much time on their hands has unravelled some of the slit-scan shots from the "Stargate" sequence at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey and posted a few of the source images.

I had read or heard somewhere that the end sequence of 2001 was highly modified shots of a bucket of water with (colored?) oil floating in it. Sad to say I can't find a source now, and there's nothing on IMDB about it. Not sure how to explain the highly geometric derived source image, but the others look like they fit.

I think I know the shots you're referring to, and they're not on the page I linked to. There are several non-slit-scanned images in the "Stargate" sequence that look fluid and sort of... uh... embryonic, for lack of a better word, and I suspect those are the ones that were done with oil spreading out across water, probably filmed at very high speeds.

Examples here and here, though the stills don't really adequately convey the sinuous, swirly-oily motion of the image in both these shots.
