12:50 pm - It's apparently time... ...not only to play the music, but to light the lights, too.
(Not that I haven't enjoyed the three-random-episodes-to-a-disc Time/Life DVDs, but I'll be happy to see Peter Ustinov and Charles Aznavour, to name just two of the first-season guests.)

The Sellers episode, in particular, is astonishing for his (only semi-joking, I think) confession that "There is no me. I do not exist. There used to be a me, but I had it surgically removed." A better summing-up of the man would be hard to find.
I don't know whether the show ever "jumped the shark", though it certainly had its share of dodgy episodes - some guests just fit into the show better than others. For me, the real downturn in Muppet-project worthiness occurred when Jim Henson died: without him, they were just never the same.
(Oh, and: I don't believe in any afterlife, but the idea of having Jim Henson, Dr. Seuss and Frank Zappa all in one place where they could collaborate is tempting...) Jim Henson, Dr. Seuss and Frank Zappa all in one place where they could collaborate
Muppets Ripped My North-Going Zax! I'll probably hold on to my T/L discs for now: they contain a bunch of episodes from later seasons, which may take a while to be released on season sets. And besides, the Harry Belafonte disc has the "Muppets auditioning for A Streetcar Named Desire" extra that's very nearly caused one friend of mine to wet the couch laughing... |
